Women’s History Month Spotlight

Dr. Lois Nell Joy Tica

A Woman Making a Difference

Women’s History Month is a time to celebrate women whose courage, faith, and perseverance are shaping communities and changing lives. One such woman is Dr. Lois Nell Joy Tica, a physician and ministry leader in the Philippines whose life reflects compassion, faith, and unwavering obedience to God’s call.

Dr. Joy leads Health Education Medical Ministry Inc., where she combines medical missions, community development, and Gospel outreach to serve some of the most vulnerable communities in the Philippines. Her work touches both the physical and spiritual needs of the people she serves.

Her ministry is beautifully reflected in the words of Matthew 9:36:

“When He saw the crowds, He had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.”

Compassion is not just a word in Dr. Joy’s ministry — it is a lifestyle.

A Heart That Responds to Crisis

When Typhoon Odette devastated communities, leaving homes destroyed and families struggling to survive, Dr. Joy immediately mobilized to help. When International Women’s Ministries asked if she could assist in reaching the victims, her response was immediate.

She said yes.

When she visited the island months later, the devastation was still visible. Homes were damaged and livelihoods lost. Yet what struck her most was the spirit of the people.

Despite the destruction, she wrote that the townsfolk remained warm and hopeful, their smiles lighting even the darkest shelters as they waited for help

With the support of International Women’s Ministries, homes were restored and communities began to rebuild. What started as disaster relief became an opportunity to bring hope and long-term transformation.

Empowering Women and Communities

Dr. Joy’s vision goes beyond emergency aid. She believes that true ministry must empower people to rebuild their lives with dignity and purpose.

On Olango Island, she met a group of mothers who supported their families by making shell necklaces. They worked tirelessly, yet received very little compensation for their labor. Instead of simply offering assistance, Dr. Joy helped the women identify the resources already present in their community — the sea, shells, their skills, and their ability to work together.

Her desire was to empower them toward sustainability and a better future.

She reminded them that God had already placed resources in their hands.

Her work reflects the wisdom of Proverbs 31:20:

“She opens her arms to the poor and extends her hands to the needy.”

Through training programs, livelihood development, and medical missions, Dr. Joy continues to walk alongside these women and families as they rebuild their lives.

God’s Provision in Her Own Story

Dr. Joy’s passion for serving others comes from her own testimony of God’s faithfulness.

When she pursued her medical education, the financial obstacles seemed overwhelming. Yet God miraculously provided for her studies through unexpected support and opportunities. What seemed impossible became a testimony of divine provision.

Today she often reflects on how the same God who provided for her education now uses her medical training to serve those who might otherwise never receive care.

Her life beautifully reflects the promise found in Philippians 4:19:

“And my God will supply every need of yours according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus.”

The doctor God provided became the doctor God now sends.

Compassion That Changes Lives

Through her ministry, Dr. Joy brings healing, dignity, and hope to communities throughout the Philippines. She partners with churches, community leaders, and ministries like International Women’s Ministries to serve families and share the love of Christ.

Her organization carries a simple but powerful message:

“Having compassion… making the difference.”

A Woman Making History

Women’s History Month reminds us that history is often written quietly through acts of courage, faith, and service.

Dr. Joy Tica is writing that story every day.

She heals the sick.
She restores communities.
She empowers women.
She brings the Gospel where hope is scarce.

Her life reflects the promise of Isaiah 58:10–11:

“If you pour yourself out for the hungry and satisfy the desire of the afflicted, then shall your light rise in the darkness… and the Lord will guide you continually.”

Through compassion and obedience, Dr. Joy continues to be a light in the Philippines — proving that when a woman says yes to God, entire communities can be transformed.
